Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer refers to transfer of embryos that have been fertilized outside the body (extracorporeally) into the uterus. We perform the transfer procedure three to five days after eggs have been harvested. Within the uterus, the embryos emerge from their protective covering, the zona pellucida, and become implanted in the mucous membrane lining of the uterus.

Technique:

One or two embryos (rarely, three) are drawn into a thin, flexible catheter that is inserted through the vagina and the cervical opening into the uterine cavity. Embryo transfer is done with the patient lying on her back and is not painful. After the transfer, the patient rests for 30 minutes.
